(Submitted: 14 December 2015 – Revised version received: 4 March 2016 – Accepted: 23 June 2016 – Published online: 30 August 2016) In the five years since Japan’s triple disaster there has been a growth of media coverage and public interest in disaster recovery. An earthquake in March 2011 triggered a tsunami that hit the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, leading to loss of the plant’s core cooling capacities, followed by hydrogen explosions and subsequent radiation leakage. The nuclear accident is often discussed, both within Japan and abroad, from a perspective of radiation leakage – as would be expected in the aftermath of such an accident. Yet this has led to confusion about the importance of radiation risks, due to conflicting reports and a lack of awareness of ongoing problems that are unrelated to radiation. These misunderstandings deserve attention. This paper provides a brief review on post-disaster health in Fukushima prefecture, highlighting areas in need of further recognition by medical professionals and policy-makers, including the risks faced by one vulnerable population: the elderly.

Mandatory evacuation of residents during the Fukushima nuclear disaster: an ethical analysis.

BACKGROUND The Japan earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011 severely damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. After learning of the radiation leak, the Japanese government issued an evacuation directive for residents within 20 km of the plant a day after the earthquake. Approximately 1 month later, this area was designated a 'high alert zone' and effectively sealed-off. The purpose of this...

Detecting residual fluorine 18 from a medical PET-CT procedure during population whole body counter screening in Fukushima.

After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear incident in 2011, radiation contamination of the affected area raised public health concerns about internal radiation exposure. Internal radiation exposure screening using a whole body counter (WBC) (Fastscan Model 2251, Canberra Inc, Meriden, CT) has been performed for the affected residents in Soma City, 40 km north of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power pl...

Leveraging public health nurses for disaster risk communication in Fukushima City: a qualitative analysis of nurses' written records of parenting counseling and peer discussions

BACKGROUND Local public health nurses (PHNs) have been recognized as the main health service providers in communities in Japan. The Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 has, however, created a major challenge for them in responding to mothers' concerns. This was in part due to difficulties in assessing, understanding and communicating health risks on low-dose radiation exposure. In order to guide...
